When we traded back little Noel, who wouldn’t breed, this is the half-sister we got in exchange. In the trailer, she put on a rodeo like I’ve never seen a cow do before, and upon unloading into the barn at home, she became quite aggressive. I went to the house swearing we’d brought home a demon-cow, and promptly dubbed her Luci in honor of her great-great-granddaddy. She had had her first calf in Dec. and was supposedly bred back to the breeder’s herdsire, which had been removed from the property “about a month or so” before we got her. She was significantly underweight & he couldn’t remember exactly when he moved the bull….leaving her & a sister in the pasture with about a half dozen or so random young (but old enough), intact males.
Thankfully, Luci has settled down in her new home & put on some weight. She finally calved in Feb., but the timing of it leaves me uncertain of the sire, so I was glad it was a bull & not a heifer I would want to register.
Luci is a decently built cow, with a very nicely shaped & attached udder. She just doesn’t seem to have very high milk production, judging by watching her calf nurse. Although she has calmed down, and will come close to me for a bucket of feed, she does not like to be touched or handled. So, she won’t make a milk cow, but would do fine as a brood cow in a beef herd. Luci is bred back to Mace and due to calve the beginning of April 2013.
