Noel is a very small girl & still quite wary of people. She is learning her name and figuring out how feeding time works. She enjoys having a bucket of feed & at times comes looking for it after the other cows are done, gazing expectantly at the parlor door. Other times I beat her to it, and call her with bucket in hand, to which she generally replies with a nervous, I-want-it-but-I’m-not-sure-about-this shake of her head. She’ll eat with the front half of her body inside the parlor door and will allow me to pet her a little, but she still won’t come the whole way inside. As Noel is at the bottom of the totem pole, excepting the youngsters she can still push around, I have to close the corral gate to keep the others away while she eats.
After owning Noel for nearly 2 years, she still didn’t appear to be bred. I had the vet out to check her and he found that there wasn’t much activity in her ovaries, at 3 1/2 years of age. After emailing back & forth with Mike Vaughn, from whom we bought her, and a letter from the vet documenting her condition, Mike decided he would trade us another similar cow to replace her. So June 24, 2011, Noel went back “home”, to what end I do not know.
